Kannawidan: The Pride of Ylocos

Kannawidan festival commemorates the founding of the province of Ilocos Sir when it was separated from what is now Ilocos Norte and from then on Ilocos Sur celebrates its traditions and culture annually.

This long celebration of Ilocanos is a way of giving thanks to the Almighty for the bountiful blessings of the rich culture and traditions of the province. Traditionally, because Ilocanos are very religious people, mass is held at St. Paul Cathedral.

There are different events during kannawidan that gives joy and hope. "Saniata ti Ilocos" is where beauty, brains, and talented ladies of every municipality of Ilocos Sur compete vying for this prestigious title. Another event is the trade fair where every municipality showcases its products. The LGU helps and supports the locality in promoting their product, especially to thòse small businesses for additional income. It is imperishable in the event the dancing fountain and drone and fireworks displays signify the resiliency of Ilocanoes amidst pandemics. December Avenue also performed in the Knnawidan festival, and of course, everyone who attended the concert we're fully vaccinated and following the health protocols.

We must continue to preserve and ignite the spirit, celebrate and embrace significantly the essence of the Kannawidan Festival for it is the pride of every Ilocanos.

  1. It's sad to think that the Kannawidan Festival has been yet again interrupted due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, in your blog, I could really feel your optismism towards this event even in this chaos. I was moved with what you said on the last sentence of your blog. It felt sincere. Padayon beh <33
